How to host live music in a small space

A new Guide helps retailers, cafes, restaurants and small bars to host live music for the first time. Experts provide tips on creating a small performance space at low cost and with no technical knowledge - including resources on how to find good musicians.

A new, free Guide developed by sister organisation of OneMusic, the Live Music Office, has been released. The Guide:

  • helps small businesses who have never hosted live music establish their small and accessible performance space
  • provides basic industry know-how
  • outlines ways to connect to local music industry communities and
  • taps into free resources and assistance from music bodies.

With COVID restrictions gone, Australian live music is definitely back and not just in big arenas and traditional live music venues.

Small business like bars, hair salons, bookstores and tiny cafes want a slice of the action - to profit from the power of live music to make customers stay longer, spend more and refer friends

Live music performances in demand

OneMusic issues licences for most live and background music in Australia.

Catherine Giuliano, Director, says

Our reports show at the moment we have super healthy monthly online enquiries for small-medium live music events which indicates that, by summer, incoming enquiry will smash pre-COVID levels.

To me, this shows business owners are keen for live music in any guise, events, theatres, full concerts and live music activation in small spaces.
