Music played during Pilates classes, remedial sessions, or in your studio waiting room is legally different from music played at home in a personal setting.
With today’s wide variety of Pilates business models - clinical and remedial Pilates practices, fitness‑focused Pilates studios and freelance instructors - it’s important to read this guide before selecting your music licence cover.
If your Pilates classes are functional fitness or strengthening classes, the Fitness Centre and Fitness & Wellbeing Instructors scheme is for you. This scheme also includes the option to add cover for background music. To determine the right licence, you’ll need to let us know how many members you have or how many classes you run, as well as your background music source.
We understand the term ‘Members’ is not one used widely in the Pilates industry. We simply mean a client of yours who has entered into some sort of agreement with your business (or a third-party provider such as ClassPass) to use your services. This covers any agreement you might have with clients – a free period as part of a subscription, casual visit, class pass or a regular sign up/booking.

If the music is not specifically for a timetabled Fitness Class, and you have purely background music - the Retail and Service Providers scheme is for you. This scheme also covers music played on telephone hold, music on websites (with limitations), and music in the workplace, covering staff-only areas of your business. You’ll need to determine the size of your business in square metres and let us know what your music source is.
