Music builds social currency

“Hospitality businesses need to whet the appetite of punters with music not just instagram-worthy food” says Clancy’s Fish Pubs hospitality entrepreneur and musician, Tom Fisher.


“The value, atmosphere and culture live music brings to your venue and brand is immeasurable” says Clancy’s Fish Pubs leader, Tom Fisher.

The hospitality entrepreneur, songwriter, front man, guitarist, bass player and session musician Tom Fisher has the unfair advantage of not only following in the musical footsteps of father Jim but the hospitality career of uncles Joe and John.

Since performing on-stage at age eight, Tom has since toured the planet as a bass player playing with Ash Grunwald, Tim Minchin, The Go Set, Carus Thompson and more. He insists hospitality businesses need to whet the appetite of punters with music not just instagram-worthy food.

“I can assure you every punter in your venue appreciates your effort to entertain: Yeah it was a great night. They had a great band. It builds social currency. I think venues need to look at the sustainable long-term benefits of having a music culture in their establishment.”

“It’s hard to put a direct value on the culture music brings a venue. It’s essential for our venues and has been that way, particularly at Clancy’s Fremantle, for over 30 years. Obviously hospitality businesses need to see return for their spending, but the value, atmosphere and culture live music brings to your venue and brand is immeasurable” Tom said.

Tom began working at his uncle’s pub as a ‘glassy’ in his teens and two decades on is now part of the team – as brand ambassador and musical director among other roles - heading up the iconic family-owned WA pub group.

“Don’t discount the immeasurable effect of having a music offering. If it seems overwhelming, investigate your local booking companies or seek advice from other music venues or even the people at OneMusic, many of whom are musicians and others in the music industry earning a crust in a second job. There is a fit for your pub, you just need to find it.

Tom took a keen part in the progress of a new music licensing project which kicked off 1 July - OneMusic Australia - which he thinks will make the back-end of a music-loving business like his a whole lot easier.

“With OneMusic coming along – we will be manage our roster of music licences in one transaction, once a year and online – and that streamlining will help get our fees into the hands of musicians like me more efficiently.
